  New Year Festival of April 2014
   
  26th of April 2014 was a special day for the members of the Kantha Ithurum Parshramayas of PRDA in Puttalam, Chilaw and Gampaha. Around 200 members and their children gathered together at the Chilaw Training Centre premises to celebrate  the Avurudu (New Year) Festival. Mr. Sunimal Fernando, founder of PRDA and Mrs. Shanti Fernando, Executive Director of PRDA were the chief guests. Apart from festival celebrations that included a variety of traditional games, the event also served the purpose of strengthening friendship, harmony and collective action among the members of the women’s organizations that spread over Puttalam, Chilaw and Gampaha.
   
  The traditional games that women and children participated included sack race, lime and spoon race, balloon blowing, bun eating competition, water drinking event, weaving coconut leaves, hit the clay pot blind folded, placing the eye on the elephant, counting seeds in papaw fruits, finding a coin of cent in a dish of flour and catching the eggs. These games were held in the open air.
   
  The indoor competitions included choosing the best laughter, best crying and the fancy dress parade. The most colourful event of the festival was the selection of Avurudu Kumai from among the children and another Avurudu Kumari from among the elderly women. The festival was concluded in the evening having presented the awards to the winners of the different games and New Year gifts to all members who attended.
